Andrew Thomas: Managing Director

Andrew believes that all home builders ought to maintain high levels of quality, corporate responsibility, workplace health and safety and ultimately long-term commitment to the industry. In a bid to shift industry focus in these areas, Andrew leads Dixon Homes Cairns with unfaltering integrity. Throughout his time in the industry, Andrew has experienced the frustration of seeing operators disregard these values. He is of the stance that shortcuts and poor-quality workmanship ought to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. When it comes to everything he does with Dixon Homes, Andrew maintains a strong focus on his core beliefs. The first of these is that clients deserve good value.

Andrew recognises the important role he and his company play in the expansion and development of the Cairns region. Amongst other things, Andrew has played a pivotal role in the construction of over 2000 homes across Cairns. Over 100 of these were built for DHA. In addition, he has also been heavily involved in the construction of medium density urban construction projects. One of the most notable of these is a high-rise block on Cairns’ main street – Lake Street.

This development is in the heart of the CBD and stands at 6 storeys high with 48 units inside. Other noteworthy projects that Andrew has led include 84 villas in the coveted suburb of City View. He has also developed over 200 spec homes with Dixon Homes Cairns. These achievements form only one part of Andrew’s illustrious career; however, they are among his proudest. Another of his favourite projects is his own home, which is in Bayview Heights. It has a floor area of over 900m 2 and was constructed by Dixon Homes Cairns. Andrew has no shortage of motivation in performing his role.

He is driven, among other things, by a passion for creating interesting spaces. He takes great interest in space utilisation and strives to capitalise on every feature of the land on which he builds.

For Andrew, building is a creative experience. It is an opportunity for him to work with clients and think outside the box. He sees imagination as a crucial feature of each design - custom or otherwise. Above all else, however, Andrew takes great pride in seeing blocks of land transformed into family homes. This is a great source of motivation for him.

Andrew is also focussed on space utilisation. He uses his extensive database of plans to provide the perfect home design for specific blocks of land. Andrew can do this through his position as both owner/operator and managing director. He is always accessible to clients, and he is constantly developing new approaches to home building. Currently, he is reviewing specifications as well as releasing new plans to meet with the dynamic needs of Cairns homebuyers.

Outside of his role as Managing Director, Andrew has numerous qualifications. He has studied civil engineering and computer-aided design. In addition to this, he has a company director’s certificate and a supervisor’s licence in Queensland, Victoria and South Australia. Andrew is also chairing four body corporates.

Previously, he has sat on the QIDC committee. Experienced builders and property developers have influenced Andrew in the past, and currently hold him in high esteem. He has contributed significantly to both Dixon Homes and the Cairns community.

Andrew supports several charities and community groups through his involvement and support of the Bulls Masters. Outside of his professional role, Andrew is a car enthusiast, enjoys golf, soccer and travelling.
